- ChallengeThe state of West Virginia has one of the highest obesity rates in the U.S. The Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA), the largest insurer in West Virginia, tasked us with creating the Web site component of a state-wide marketing campaign promoting the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices. The purpose of the site was to provide educational information to support the campaign's billboard, radio, and TV ads which challenged West Virginians to exercise more and make healthier dietary choices. The key message was that making small changes -- eating smaller portions, drinking fewer sodas, walking more -- can add up to make a big difference in your health and the quality of your life.
- SolutionWVPortions is a fun, visually engaging site which contains a host of information and tools to support PEIA's wellness messages. The site presents a number of simple strategies to help viewers make healthy lifestyle changes -- for example, tips for eyeballing food portion sizes and how to choose wisely when eating out at restaurants. Interactive tools such as the "Burn it Off" calculator, which lets you compare popular fast food choices to see how long you would have to walk to "burn off" each one -- provide a fun way for visitors to think about food choices in ways they may not have considered before. A Research section is updated frequently to provide the latest information and news in the area of health and nutrition. The site has recently grown to include a new section "Just for Kids" as well as an online course to be used in a pilot incentive program for PEIA.
In 2006, IDD, Inc. created an educational “Parents” section on the wvportions.com Web site. Parents are presented information about the importance of their role as their child’s leader in the area of food choices, eating habits, and participation in physical activity on a regular basis.
Information from USDA on food recommendations for different ages and different food groups is presented, as well as tips on smart shopping, meal preparation, soda, snacks, eating out with kids, and picky eaters.
